Preparing Your Home for Winter — Disposal of Renovation Debris

As October and November arrive, many homeowners take on exterior upgrades or minor remodels before winter closes in. Whether you’re replacing siding, removing old insulation, or doing trim work, managing the resulting debris responsibly is essential. San Juan Transfer Station offers the facilities and guidance you need to handle renovation waste safely and efficiently.

Why Fall Is an Ideal Time

Working late in the fall lets you complete exterior tasks in milder, drier weather before heavy rains or snow restrict outdoor work. Also, station congestion tends to ease as yard‐waste traffic diminishes, giving you better access for drop-offs.

Accepted Materials & Pricing

The station accepts wood (non-treated or painted), metal, appliances, paint, and common recyclables.

Pricing depends on the material:

  • Clean woody debris & brush: $323.40 per ton
  • Scrap metal: $294 per ton
  • Recycling (by 32-gallon can): $8.00 or $324.99 per ton
  • Appliances (e.g. refrigerators, freezers): $62.00 per item
  • Other large appliances, painted materials, and e-waste may have special rates or conditions.

Remember: treated wood, materials with asbestos, lead siding, and certain hazardous materials are not accepted in standard drop-off. Always check ahead with station staff.

Preparing Your Debris

  1. Sort by type. Keep wood, siding, metal, insulation, and other materials separate to streamline sorting and reduce contamination.
  2. Break down large components. Cut sheathing, trim, siding, and wood into manageable lengths.
  3. Remove hardware. Strip nails, screws, flashing, and glass where feasible.
  4. Bag or wrap loose materials. Bundle insulation, dusted debris, or small fragments in bags or coverings.
  5. Cover the load. Use tarps or wrap items to prevent scattering during transport.

Safety & Regulatory Considerations

Wear gloves, safety glasses, and dust masks when handling debris—especially insulation, drywall, or broken siding. If you suspect materials contain lead, asbestos, or hazardous sealants, segregate and consult local environmental disposal options.

Drop-Off Procedures & Timing

The station operates Friday–Sunday, 9 AM to 4 PM, and Monday 9 AM to noon. For contractor or heavy jobs, “special hours” may be arranged—call ahead to confirm.

Arrive early to avoid traffic, especially near ferry times, and inform attendants you have renovation or demolition debris so they can direct you to the appropriate bay.
